INTERIM TAG REMOVED: McDuffie named Head Basketball Coach at Greensboro College

The Greensboro College Athletics department has announced the hiring of Greensboro College alum Michael McDuffie as its 16th Men’s Basketball Head Coach in program history.

McDuffie, who played for the Pride from 2005-2009, has been an assistant coach for the Pride under two different coaching regimes, including a stint as the Interim Head Coach during the 2024-2025 season. As a player, McDuffie was a four-year starter who scored 673 career points and had 297 assists, which is 5th all-time in program history. McDuffie is also 8th all-time in games started and 9th all-time in total steals.

While an assistant coach and then Interim Head Coach for the Pride, McDuffie coached and mentored the 2023-2024 USA South Conference Player of the Year (Matthew Brown), helped lead the program to their second straight USA South Conference Tournament appearance in 2024-2025 by winning three of the final four games of the season as Interim Head Coach, and helped the team maintain the best scoring defense in the USA South in 2024-2025, including holding opponents under 64 points per game in the games in which he was the Interim Head Coach. The team also increased its scoring average from 58.4 points per game to 70 points per game after McDuffie took over last season.

Other statistical improvements the team saw under McDuffie last year included field goal percentage (42% to 46%), points in the paint (26 points per game to 35 points per game), as well as on the defensive end, going from 2.5 steals per game to 5.2, and 3.2 blocks per game to 4.2.

McDuffie spent four seasons at High Point Christian Academy prior to joining the Greensboro College Men’s Basketball staff as an assistant coach. After arriving at HPCA in 2018, he was instrumental in the advances within the program. McDuffie helped guide the program to a 21-9 record in 2018. In the 2020-2021 season, he helped HPCA to a state final four appearance and a state championship appearance in 2022 for the first time since 2016.

Before his time at HPCA, Coach McDuffie served as the Head Coach at Caldwell Academy for the 2017-2018 season. McDuffie led the program to a 19-7 record while capturing conference regular season and conference tournament titles. Also guiding the program to the second round of the state playoffs.

The Paterson, NJ native spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Western Guilford High School, where he again helped elevate the program. Western Guilford basketball saw increased win totals from 2011 to 2014, advanced to a conference championship for the first time in school history (2013-2014 season) and secured state playoff berths 3 out of 6 seasons.

McDuffie also spend five years as a head coach with the formerly known Under Armour sponsored AAU program Team Felton, where he mentored and coached a host of players from the NCAA Division III level to Power 5 conference signees.

Director of Athletics Jerry Fisk says of the hiring of McDuffie, “I am excited to name Michael McDuffie as our next men’s basketball coach. This search had the most competitive applicant pool that I have seen in my career. Ultimately, Michael’s perseverance and ability to lead the team to a successful end of the season was a major factor. I believe that Coach McDuffie can help us regain a recruiting footprint in Greensboro and the Triad and provide continuity and care for our student-athletes. I am excited to have Michael join us and see what our team can do with a full year under his lead.”

Coach McDuffie says of the opportunity to lead the Greensboro Men’s Basketball program, “Greensboro College has significantly influenced my life, making this opportunity deeply personal. I am both honored and humbled to be appointed as the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at my alma mater. I look forward to dedicating myself to our student-athletes and striving for excellence in competition. I wish to extend my sincere thanks to President Czarda, Director of Athletics Jerry Fisk, and the search committee for their faith in me and my vision for the program.”
