Roberts Wesleyan Director of Athletics Bob Segave has announced current men’s basketball interim head coach Mark Saladzius will be named as the next head men’s basketball coach for the Redhawks. Saladzius will be the 16th coach in the program’s history, serving as the second head coach since the Redhawk’s joined the NCAA Division II.

Saladzius graduated in 2009 from Roberts Wesleyan College with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. While at Roberts, he played four years on the men’s basketball team before serving as an assistant coach under longtime head coach Rob McCoy for nine years.

During the 2017-18 season, the Redhawks got off to a 6-0 start under the leadership of Saladzius while coach McCoy took some time away from the team to deal with health issues. The Redhawks went on to make the East Coast Conference Championships where they fell to Daemen College in the first round.

“We are thrilled to be able to name Mark as the next head coach of the men’s basketball team,” Segave said. “Mark has put in the time here as an assistant coach and has shown his dedication to the college and this program. The team shows enthusiasm playing for Mark and the men’s basketball program is primed to be a force in our conference. This is an exciting time for men’s basketball at Roberts Wesleyan.”

In addition to his time as an assistant coach with Roberts, Saladzius played professionally in England with the Bradford Dragons in the WBL Division 1 league for one year. As a former player and team captain for the Redhawks, Saladzius scored more than 1,000 points and made more than 500 rebounds during his four-year career.

“I just want to thank President Porterfield and Coach Segave for believing in me and giving me this opportunity to be a part of the Redhawks athletic department,” Saladzius said. “As an alumnus of the college, I know how special this place is and I am truly grateful and excited to be a part of a faculty and staff that not only cares for each other, but is always ready and willing to serve others first. I also want to give a special thank you to Coach McCoy for bringing me into his program years ago and allowing me to be a part of his coaching staff after graduating. There are countless life lessons that I learned from coach during all those years, most that I still use on a day-to-day basis, and I plan to work tirelessly to instill them into the players in our program for years to come.”

The Roberts men’s basketball team currently has an 11-9 overall record and 7-5 conference mark. The team sits in fourth place among the conference with eight games remaining in the regular season.
