Assist the Head Coach in the fulfillment of the Head Coach’s responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Requires bachelor’s degree. Previous College coaching experience preferred. Other requirements include: personal affirmation of the Christian mission of Westmont College and the Community Life Statement and adherence to its behavioral expectations, clear understanding of and ability to articulate the distinctives of a Christian Liberal Arts education; strong interpersonal and demonstrated organizational skills; solid administrative and tech skills. Requires a minimum of 1 year coaching experience. Requires some experience managing projects and performing financial analysis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The assistant coach serves as assigned by the Head Coach including responsibility for some or all of the following:

  1. Organizes and conducts practice sessions as directed by Head Coach.
  2. Maintains budget in coordination with the A.D.’s office and Head Coach.
  3. Orders equipment and supplies for basketball program by following proper procedure with a purchase order.
  4. Submits travel requests to Assistant AD for Operations.
  5. Under direction of Head Coach, prepares schedule with special attention to ensuring that student-athletes miss a minimal amount of class time.
  6. As directed, furnishes list of athletes and data to secretary for eligibility forms: obtain signatures of all team members for the NCAA Certificate of Clearance.
  7. In coordination with Head Coach, recruits student-athletes for Men’s Basketball.
  8. Maintains accounting records of all financial aid given to comply with Conference limitations and reporting requirements.
  9. As requested, provides accurate roster to the Assistant AD and Associate AD for Communication at the beginning of each season. Informs all team members of specific eligibility regulations and counsels team members with regard to their responsibility to maintain eligibility.
  10. At direction of Head Coach submits check requests for the following items: food and lodging, entry fees, recruiting expenses, officials and all cash expenditures with receipts.
  11. Ensures Asst. Athletic Trainer is informed of practice time and specific needs regarding uniforms and laundry items.
  12. Maintains accurate inventory of supplies and equipment. An inventory should be completed at the end of season and be made available upon request by A.D.
  13. In conjunction with SID assistant, administers home events including officials, score keepers, statistics, equipment, etc. Maintains accurate records of basketball game and report to SID’s office.
  14. Responsible for knowledge of current NCAA and PacWest rules, policies, and deadlines governing basketball.
  15. At direction of Head Coach, ensures all basketball athletes have passed a medical examination (coordinated by the ATC) and have completed all medical/insurance forms.
  16. Works with ATC and team doctor following an injury to receive clearance prior to resuming activity.
  17. Submits paperwork for all conference, all Americans, academic all Americans and special awards candidates.
  18. Responsible for assisting with fundraising in connection with the Head Coach and Athletics Development Director.
  19. Works with Head Coach and Admissions office to ensure that applicants interested in basketball are treated professionally and responded to in a timely manner.
  20. Provides spiritual leadership to team(s) which is consistent with the Westmont’s Christian tradition. The coach plays a significant role in the spiritual development of the student athlete. The expectation is that Westmont’s athletic teams represent the quality of the institution. The most objective measure of success is Wins and losses. Coaches should lead their program with a strong priority of being successful on the court, but without compromising the College’s integrity and overall mission.
  21. Expectations for workplace demeanor include but are not limited to: working collaboratively and harmoniously with co-workers, customers and others by sharing ideas and resources willingly, constructively and positively; listening to and objectively and respectfully considering the ideas and perspectives of others; readily admitting and correcting personal mistakes; meeting commitments; keeping your supervisor and others who may be affected informed about work progress; addressing problems willingly and constructively to discover practical and lasting solutions acceptable to all parties; working promptly toward reconciliation and forgiveness during conflict; respecting the diversity of our community in words and deeds.
  22. The violation of NCAA rules is prohibited and may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
