Job Duties
65%: Proposes the strategies, goals and objectives for the sports program on a short and long term basis. Assumes full team responsibility for the performance of the team. Plan, schedule and supervise practices that condition and train athletes, ensure safety, develop skills and teach Principles of Community. Scout opponents, prepare student-athletes in strategy, coaches team at competitive events and perform game management. Plans, conducts and supervises all practices and conditioning sessions. Evaluates student-athletes performance and designs instructional opportunities to improve technical and strategic execution based on sound motor learning and biomechanical principles. Assumes full team responsibility for performance. Assist in hosting home competitions and tournaments. Ensures adherences to all governing rules, university, department, conference, NCAA policies and procedures. Exemplify professionalism and sportsmanship during contests, at practice and in all interactions with players, opponents, officials, parents, spectators, and administrators. Represents and promotes professional conduct, university good will and high standards at all promotional and media related events including games. Leads the program coaching staff.

15%: Develops and implements an effective recruitment plan. Assumes full team responsibility for recruitment within the framework of the university, department, conference, NCAA rules. Assumes full team responsibility for successful identification, evaluation and recruitment of student athletes in which to build and maintain a competitive athletic program. Create and maintain detailed files on all prospective student-athletes with contact dates and times and other pertinent information. Assess prospective student-athletes athletic and academic ability in keeping with DIII competitive and UCSC admission standards. Observe competitions, review video and host campus visits for prospective student-athletes. Understand and adhere to all recruiting legislation, and pass the annual NCAA DIII Bylaws Test. Understand basic eligibility rules and provide immediate student-athlete information to the Eligibility Coordinator upon request.

10%: Financially responsible for maintaining a sound budget. Proposes budgets and grants, reconciles expenses and proposes purchases for sports program. Proactively tracks, reviews and monitors budget to identify discrepancies. Keeps Athletic Director informed of identified funding shortfalls and surpluses. Works with Business Manager to resolve budget issues and realign expenses in order to avoid interest charges on deficit balances. Meets with Business Manager at least three times a year to review the budget during the season: beginning, mid-season, and end of season. Keep inventory of team acquired practice gear, uniforms, and sport equipment. Participate in fundraising activities for the program and department. Strategically develops fundraising events to generate additional funding to support the team budget. Supervise all fund raising activities including: event marketing, facility reservations, budget planning, staffing, etc. Follow campus F&E policy and guidelines regarding event planning and obtaining appropriate levels of approval. Complete the “Fundraiser Income/Expense Form” pre and post event. Assist University Relations and Athletic Department in all department fundraisers.

5%: Administrative duties including maintaining the online Google calendar. Submit departmental and University paperwork that is complete, accurate, and on time. Adhere to all legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines of the Federal and State Government, University of California Office of the President, UCSC, NCAA and Athletic Department, including student-athlete benefits.. Report and document student-athlete conduct violations, incidents that may be crimes, and crimes (including hazing) to the appropriate personnel or authority.

5%: Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to attending all coach meetings and serve on committees upon request. Supervise and mentor all Assistant and Volunteer Assistant Coaches. Develop and recommend to the Athletic Director team and individual expectations. Arrange all travel logistics and create a Travel Itinerary. Inform proper personnel when changes occur in practice, games and travel arrangements. Provide game result information/quotes/articles to the Sports Information Director. Acquire approval before discussing or distributing expectations to team or individuals. Read and understand guidelines, rules and other information in the UCSC student handbook, student-athlete handbook and coaches’ handbook. Attend training sessions which include but are not limited to: Staff Human Resources Orientation, Employee Expectations and Goals, Business Practices, Procedures, and Expectations, Google, software, etc. Actively participate in anti-hazing training and workshops. Ensure attendance by student-athletes at all mandatory meetings/orientations and provide at least two players to serve on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Keep office and storage areas orderly. May participate in public relations activities as authorized.
