Johnson, Kapoor added to Lipscomb Basketball Staff; Cherry promoted to Associate Head Coach

Lipscomb Men’s Basketball head coach Kevin Carroll announced coaching changes ahead of the 2026-2027 season. Scott Cherry has been promoted to associate head coach, while Trey Johnson and Sagar Kapoor join the coaching staff as assistant coaches. 

SCOTT CHERRY – ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH

Scott Cherry has been promoted to the position of Associate Head Coach. He will continue to contribute to the Lipscomb University basketball program in his new role, building on his achievements and experiences from last season.

Scott Cherry joins the ranks of Associate Head Coach after serving as an Assistant Coach at Lipscomb University. During the 2025-2026 season, Cherry played a pivotal role in the team’s success. Under his guidance, players such as Grant Asman and Mateo Esmeraldo achieved significant individual honors, with Asman earning a place on the First Team All-ASUN and Esmeraldo on the Third Team All-ASUN. The team also celebrated a strong season with 19 wins and secured a first-round bye in the 2026 ASUN Tournament.

TREY JOHNSON – ASSISTANT COACH 

Johnson joins the Lipscomb coaching staff following his recent role as an Assistant Coach at Charleston Southern University.

Johnson brings a wealth of experience to Lipscomb, having held significant roles in various basketball programs. Most recently, he served as the Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Coach at Charleston Southern from 2024 to 2026. During his tenure, Johnson was instrumental in coaching standout players such as Taje Kelly, the Big South Player of the Year, and A’lahn Sumler, who earned First Team Big South honors. His efforts helped lead Charleston Southern to achieve the best start in school history last season.

Prior to his time at Charleston Southern, Johnson held the position of Assistant Coach at Presbyterian College from 2023 to 2024, where he also served as the Co-offensive Coordinator and Recruiting Coordinator. His coaching prowess was evident as he guided players like Kory Mincy to the Big South All-Freshmen Team and Marquis Barnett to the Second Team All-Big South.

Johnson’s coaching career began at Francis Marion University as an Assistant Coach from 2018 to 2019. He then progressed to become the Director of Basketball Operations for Presbyterian College Men’s Basketball from 2019 to 2021, followed by a coaching stint at Lenoir-Rhyne University from 2021 to 2023. Johnson started his journey in basketball as the Head Student Manager at Charleston Southern from 2014 to 2018.

Head coach Kevin Carroll expressed his enthusiasm about Trey, stating, “We are thrilled to welcome Trey Johnson to our coaching staff. Trey is someone I have admired from afar for his remarkable work ethic, passion for the game, and well-roundedness in all areas of coaching. He has built an outstanding reputation for identifying, recruiting, and developing talented student-athletes at all of his previous stops. What truly distinguishes Trey is his remarkable gift for building strong, authentic relationships—a quality that perfectly reflects our program’s commitment to impacting lives both on and off the court. We are excited about the positive influence Trey will have on our team and look forward to seeing the difference he will make throughout our program.”

SAGAR KAPOOR – ASSISTANT COACH 

Sagar brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles, most recently serving as an assistant coach at Northwest Florida State College.

Sagar Kapoor has demonstrated his coaching prowess through various roles over the years. He served as an Assistant Coach at Northwest Florida State College from 2023 to 2026, where he made significant contributions to the team, leading them to become the 2024 Panhandle Conference Runner-Ups. During his tenure, he coached eight First Team All-Panhandle Conference players, five Second Team All-Conference players, and one Panhandle Conference Player of the Year.

Before his time at Northwest Florida State College, Kapoor was an Assistant Coach at Pensacola State College from 2019 to 2023. There, he coached 10 All-Panhandle Conference players over four seasons. His career also includes a significant period at Gardner-Webb University, where he served as the Director of Basketball Operations and Graduate Assistant from 2016 to 2019. During his time at Gardner-Webb, the team won the 2019 Big South Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Kapoor began his career as a student manager at East Carolina University from 2013 to 2016.

“We are excited to welcome Sagar to our program,” said Carroll.  “Sagar brings a skill set that is absolutely essential in today’s modern college basketball landscape. He possesses a keen understanding of where the game is now and where it’s headed, allowing us to stay ahead of the curve. In his primary role of general manager, Sagar will be instrumental in roster management and will serve as a central touchpoint for many facets of our program. We will rely on his exceptional organizational abilities, extensive national and international recruiting connections, strong relationship-building skills, and on-court coaching expertise to help unify our staff, players, and recruits. Sagar’s leadership and vision will be invaluable as we continue to elevate our program.”

“Along with our new coaches, we are extremely pleased to have Jack McMahon and Byron Sanford returning for their second season on staff.  Both coaches proved to be extremely impactful in our program’s development, and they will return with an enhanced role that reflects their value within our organization,” concluded Carroll.
