Anderson University head men’s basketball coach Jeff Brookman on Wednesday announced that Ben Johnson has been promoted to full-time assistant coach, effective immediately.
“I am excited about the promotion of Ben to full-time assistant,” said Brookman. “He has done an excellent job the past two years as a graduate assistant and will continue to add great value to our program and university. Ben has great ideas as it relates to scouting, recruiting, academics and practice planning. He is capable of excelling in all areas, but even more importantly, Ben will be a positive role model for current and future Trojans, while embracing the mission of our great university.”
Johnson, who has been a member of the coaching staff for the past two seasons, will continue to help with player skill development and prepare scouting reports while serving as the recruiting coordinator.
A native of Spartanburg, S.C., Johnson was a 2011 graduate of Boiling Springs High School and played for Brookman at Spartanburg Methodist (2011-13). He was a shooting guard on the 2012-13 Pioneer squad that finished the regular season with a perfect 30-0 overall record and earned the No. 1 ranking in the final NJCAA Top 25 Division I National Poll, with a stellar 35-1 record.
Johnson went on to become a member of the first basketball team in school history at Columbia International University (2013-2016) and earned Honorable Mention All-Conference accolades as a junior, while wrapping up his collegiate career with more than 1,000 points and Second-Team All-Conference honors as a senior.
“I’m extremely excited for the opportunity to continue doing what I love,” said Johnson. “I want to thank Coach Brookman for believing in me and I look forward to building something special here at Anderson University.”
He will earn his masters of business administration (MBA) from AU in June and is engaged to Alexis Zwilling. The couple is planning on getting married just prior to the start of basketball season in November.
