JUCO NEWS: Whittington named Head Basketball Coach at East Central CC

East Central Community College is pleased to announce Jordan Whittington as the new head coach of the men’s basketball program. Whittington, who has served as the Warriors’ assistant men’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator since 2022, will officially assume his new duties immediately.

A native of Madison, Miss., Whittington brings a wealth of coaching, recruiting, and player development experience from programs across Mississippi and the Southeast. Prior to joining East Central, he served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Hinds Community College, where he coached six All-MACCC players, including a conference Player of the Year, and helped the program improve its win total while building an extensive network of high school coaches and standout prospects across the region.

“Jordan was the right choice because he never stopped working to put this program in a better position — from day one as an assistant, he recruited with urgency, developed players, and poured himself into East Central Warrior basketball. We conducted an extensive search but found the best fit was already in our building. I expect Jordan to continue elevating this program, to a level of competitiveness in the MACCC that will make the East Central campus and our community proud. Jordan has the relationships, the work ethic, and the vision to succeed in leading this program,” said ECCC Athletic Director Paul Nixon.

Beyond the collegiate level, Whittington has established himself as a respected player developer, having worked with NBA veterans Greg Monroe and Langston Galloway, along with professional players including Leroy Buchanan of the Memphis Grizzlies, Dee Bost of AS Monaco, and Quindarry Weatherspoon of the Golden State Warriors, among many others. He has also coached extensively on the AAU circuit with Nike, Adidas, and Independent programs, guiding teams to undefeated records in national tournament play and recruiting and developing numerous Division I and Division II prospects along the way.

“The biggest change I want people to see is a tougher, more disciplined East Central basketball identity. We’re going to play with an edge, defend relentlessly, and compete every possession. There will be a clear standard in how we practice, prepare, and represent this program. East Central basketball will be known for accountability, player development, and winning the right way. When people watch us play, they’ll know exactly who we are — physical, connected, and unapologetically competitive,” Whittington said.

Whittington began his coaching career as an assistant at Madison Central High School before moving into the junior college ranks. He is also a sought-after presence on the camp and showcase circuit, having coached at events including the All American Top 150 JUCO Showcase in Atlanta, Ga., the Lucky Legend Training Camp in Jackson, Miss., the Mississippi State Team Camp in Starkville, Miss., and the Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf MS Top 100.

Whittington earned his bachelor’s degree in sports administration from Mississippi State University in 2019, where he also served as a manager for the Bulldogs’ men’s basketball program under head coach Ben Howland. He later earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Arkansas State University in 2021.
