JWU Charlotte MBB Staff Update

Johnson & Wales Charlotte Men’s Basketball Head Coach Josh Gross has announced the hiring of Kevin Harrington as assistant coach, and the addition of Dion White as a volunteer coach.

Kevin Harrington comes to Johnson & Wales from United Faith Christian Academy where he served as an assistant coach on the boys basketball team. He also was an assistant coach under Coach Gross at Gaston Christian School, while also serving as the head coach of the Gaston Christian girls basketball team. Harrington spent the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons as an assistant coach at Union (KY) College.

“Coach Harrington will be a major asset to our program and staff,” said Coach Gross. “He brings a tremendous amount of experience & knowledge that will help take our program to the next level. Coach Harrington’s experience from coming off a state title run at United Faith Christian Academy, being a former pro player, previously coaching at the college level as well as being very in tune with local grassroots clubs will greatly benefit our Student Athletes and give us an opportunity to continue to recruit high character kids. I know Kevin will do an amazing job and I’m super grateful to have him on board.”

Harrington was a four-year starter at USC-Upstate from 2000-2004. He ranks 4th all-time in school history with 1,536 points. He is also 11th in USC-Upstate history with 599 rebounds. Harrington earned Peach Belt All-Conference honors each of his four years in college, and was also named Peach Belt Freshman of the Year.

He went on to play professionally in China and Mexico before finishing his career in the ABA with the Vermont Frost Heaves. Coach White is originally from Ft. Myers, FL where he attended Ft. Myers High School. While at FMHS, he was part of the basketball program that made three FHSAA Elite 8 appearances. He also earned 2nd Team All Defense honors while in high school.   Upon graduation, Dion attended Warner University and graduated in April 2021 with a degree in Exercise & Sport Science.   Coach Gross is excited about what White will bring to Johnson & Wales. “I’m really looking forward to having Dion on staff. He is very eager to learn and grow as a young coach. Dion brings energy, passion and a great work ethic. He will be able to relate to our players and challenge them at the same time. I think Dion has a bright future as a coach and I’m excited that he chose JWU to begin his coaching journey”
