King wins #100 at Hostos

In just over 5 seasons as a Head Coach, Dr. Jody King reached a coaching milestone on Sunday as he won his 100th college basketball game as a Head Coach as the Caimans beat Dutchess 87-44. Coach King entered the season just 11 wins short of the elusive 100 and got number 100 this afternoon as the 9th nationally ranked in country Caimans extended their win streak to 7 games pushing their overall record to 11-2.

Coach King, who has been coaching basketball the last 21 years, started as a Head Coach when he took over the reins at SUNY Maritime, an NCAA Division 3 institution, in the highly competitive Skyline Conference in 2007-08. In just three seasons at Maritime College, he helped guide the Privateers to a 47-35 overall record. Each year the team progressed in wins from 13 to 15 to 19 wins. The 19 wins were the most wins in a season for the Privateers. King’s 47 Maritime victories was more than double the total number of wins the previous 5 seasons combined before his arrival. He left Maritime as the college’s all time most winning basketball coach by percentage.

At Hostos, since 2011, Dr. King has only refined his craft as a successful coach as he continues to mold his student-athletes into successful men. Upon being hired, King, was given the task of helping turn around a Hostos program that had struggled the previous few seasons. King immediately paid dividends as his program helped establish a level of accountability and consistency as the team won 19 games while the student-athletes fared well in the classroom. The following year the Caimans broke thru as they were nationally ranked, won 23 games, and again saw academic success. This early season has not been any different as the Caimans are ranked 9th in the nation and are currently 11-2 and 5-0 in the CUNY Conference. As the Caimans won on Sunday and subsequently gave King a Gatorade shower at half court, King, spoke about remaining status quo, "Yes, I am proud of reaching this milestone, but, I am more proud of the continual growth and development of our student-athletes." Dr. King followed up to state, "To have former players and coaches be in the gym today and share this accomplishment with our current student-athletes is very special. I am proud to be a coach and have the opportunity to help mold these young men on a continual basis especially here at Hostos. Our success is a byproduct of our belief that we are a family who will go the extra mile for each other. Nada es imposible."
