Lakeland University Hires Assistant Coach

Lakeland University has hired former Muskies standout player Kurt Jansen to fill the role of lead assistant men’s basketball coach.

Jansen recently completed a one-year stint as lead assistant coach for Williston State College, a junior college in Williston, N.D., where he coached under former Muskie player Rylee Hernandez. Prior to that, Jansen, served as an assistant coach in the Wrightstown High School boys basketball program.

“Kurt’s relentless work ethic, loyalty and burning desire to serve others is everything I could ask for in an assistant coach,” said Lakeland Head Men’s Basketball Coach Sam Schroeder. “Kurt is a Lakeland alum and is extremely passionate about our university. It was a pleasure to coach Kurt for four years at Lakeland, and I am looking forward to working with him.”

Jansen played for the Muskies from 2011-15, a four-year contributor who played in 97 career games. He was a multi-year captain who helped lead the Muskies to 77 wins, a Northern Athletics Conference (now Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference) North Division regular-season title and back-to-back conference tournament appearances. As a senior he won the T.W. Hoernemann basketball academic award.

Jansen is a native of Wrightstown, Wis., and was a three-year letter winner and two-time all-Olympia Conference honoree in basketball at Wrightstown. He holds an exercise science degree from Lakeland and a master’s degree in recreational and athletic administration from Western Kentucky University.
