Lebowitz promoted to Head Coach at Franklin College

Brian Lebowitz has been promoted to head coach of the Franklin College men’s basketball team, it was announced by interim director of athletics Lance Marshall. Lebowitz assumes the role after a six-year stint as an assistant coach with the program.

“I’m so thankful to President Prather, Coach Marshall and the Franklin community for the opportunity,” Lebowitz said. “Since I arrived in Franklin, I have been extremely fortunate to work with so many great players, coaches and alumni. This opportunity is extremely humbling, and I am looking forward to continuing the legacy President Prather left of producing championship teams on the court while supporting great student-athletes in the Franklin community.”

“Brian’s six years at Franklin College as Assistant Coach, and more recently Associate Head Coach, have prepared him well for this opportunity,” Interim Director of Athletics Lance Marshall added. “He is a successful recruiter with an incredible knack for building relationships with student-athletes and developing them on and off the court. I have great confidence the successful tradition of Franklin College basketball will continue under his leadership.”

Lebowitz joined the men’s basketball staff at Franklin prior to the 2014-15 season and was promoted to Associate Head Coach during the 2019-20 season. Lebowitz was instrumental to the Grizzlies’ most recent HCAC regular season championship that saw Franklin go 17-9 overall and 13-5 in league play to clinch its first league championship since 2006-07.

Since joining the staff, Lebowitz has helped develop eight different Grizzlies who have earned all-conference selections. In each of the last four seasons, Franklin’s win total and conference win total has increased, culminating in this past year’s regular season title.

“Brian Lebowitz is a rising star in the coaching profession, and I am excited that his rise will continue here at Franklin,” said President Kerry Prather.  “He has more than proven himself on the court and on the recruiting trail.  More than that, he is a product of Division III who has embraced the unique mission of this level and of Franklin College.  His personal, caring approach with student-athletes is obvious from the unanimous endorsement of his promotion by the returning players and the excitement of incoming freshmen. I am excited to watch the program flourish under Brian’s leadership.”

“I am excited about the bright future of our program,” Lebowitz added. “We will keep producing quality student-athletes off the court while striving to produce a championship-level product on the floor. I am looking forward to continuing the tradition of playing fast-paced, exciting basketball inside the Spurlock Center. It’s a great time to be a Grizzly and I’m excited to get started.”

Lebowitz is a 2014 graduate of Kenyon College (Ohio), where he enjoyed a stellar four-year playing career while majoring in economics. He was a three-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) selection, finishing with 1,274 points, 754 rebounds, 100 steals and a program-record 162 blocks. Lebowitz was named to Kenyon’s Merit List four times while also earning Honors Court selections from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

Lebowitz, who also holds an MBA degree from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, has served as the Assistant to the Athletic Director for the past three years, and his new role will include duties as Assistant Director of Athletics.
