Legendary Princeton head coach Pete Carril passes away

The family of former Princeton head basketball coach Pete Carril has issued the following statement:

The Carril family is sad to report that Coach Peter J. Carril passed away peacefully this morning. We kindly ask that you please respect our privacy at this time as we process our loss and handle necessary arrangements. More information will be forthcoming in the following days.”

A 1998 inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Carril coached the Tigers for 29 years where he guided the program to 514 wins, 13 Ivy League championships and 11 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Carril, who was 92, was the head coach at Princeton from 1967-1996. During his tenure at Princeton, he went 514–261 and captured 13 Ivy League regular season championships. He also spent one season as the head coach at Lehigh (1966-67), and worked with the Sacramento Kings after he departed Princeton.

Carril was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997.
