Head Men’s Basketball Coach Joe Loughran announced the hiring of Sean Locke to join the Rutgers University-Newark staff.
Locke will take over for Jon Howell-Clarke as the Graduate Assistant Coach with the Scarlet Raiders and will have a hand in all aspects of the program from practice planning and implementation to recruitment of student-athletes, scouting and more.
“We are very excited and pleased to be able to welcome Sean to the Rutgers-Newark men’s basketball program,” said Loughran. “He has an excellent basketball background and will be a major asset for us over the next few years.”
A graduate of the University of Delaware in May of 2016, Locke earned three letters in his four-year career and helped his teams to 61 triumphs. He was named to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) All-Academic Team, also earning the UD Team Sportsmanship Award, the UD Dr. Myles Brand Sports Management Award. Additionally, Locke received a nod to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for his final two seasons with the Blue Hens.
Locke was a member of the CAA title winning squad in 2013-14, helping his team to the NCAA Tournament and seeing action against a powerful Michigan State program in the first round.
A member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Locke was also a PNC Bank Student-Athlete Achiever honoree and he earned a full-scholarship for his senior season at UD.
Locke coached at the University of Delaware Basketball Camp, interned at IMG Sports Network and spent time with the Philadelphia 76’ers in the summer of 2015 as part of their marketing team.
“I am extremely blessed and grateful to have this opportunity to work on the Rutgers-Newark men’s basketball staff,” said Locke. “I am very focused and determined to help the program continue its success, and I am very much looking forward to it.”
Rutgers-Newark will begin practice in mid-October, and will open the 2016-17 season at Centenary College on November 15. The Scarlet Raiders open play in Newark with the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic on Friday, November 18.
