After spending the past four years on the Allegheny basketball coaching staff as a student assistant, recent graduate Patrick Martinelli will remain on the staff as an assistant to head coach Bob Simmons.
“I am very excited to have Pat as a member of our coaching staff and our Men’s Basketball Family,” said Simmons. “I have gotten to know Pat over the past two years while he served as a student-assistant for me. During those two years, I have been really impressed with his character and passion for Allegheny College, Allegheny Men’s Basketball, and the game itself.
“He has a very good knowledge and understanding of the game, he knows our system and the type of student-athletes we are looking to bring into our family. He will be a great mentor and role model for our men.”
A native of Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, Martinelli majored in managerial economics at Allegheny before graduating in 2017. He worked on the men’s basketball staff in all four of his years at Allegheny, seeing his role continually grow over the span. This past season, Martinelli prepared and presented opponent scouting reports, conducted thorough film analysis of both games and practice, developed and supervised individual workouts, assisted with team travel and lodging arrangements, and escorted prospective student-athletes and their guardians on campus visits.
In addition to his role with the basketball program, Martinelli also worked as a student assistant in the Allegheny athletic department, primarily in the athletic communications office. He assisted the athletic communications staff in gameday management and press box operations, in-game statistic keeping, historical research and archiving, and organization of both current and past athletic photography.
In each of the past three summers, Martinelli has worked as a coach at camps and clinics held at Frostburg State, Cleveland State, and Xavier. He also worked The Hoop Group camp in Pittsburgh in the summer of 2016, and at The Scoring Factory in the summer of 2014.
Martinelli will join full-time assistant Conor Smith and volunteer assistant Norm Price for Simmons’ third season at the helm of the Allegheny program, which is slated to begin on Nov. 17 with a 7 p.m. tilt against Houghton on the opening day of the annual Greg Richards ’08 Memorial Tip Off Classic in the David V. Wise Center.
