Jonathan Mattox, who has spent the past four seasons with the Morehead State men’s basketball program as graduate assistant, director of basketball operations, and as assistant coach, has been promoted to full-time assistant coach.
During the 2016-17 season, Mattox was promoted from director of basketball operations to interim assistant coach.
“Jonathan earned the right to be an assistant coach here because he did a terrific job with recruiting, on the floor, scouting, coaching, just all of the things that come with that job. All of those things have made the change very seamless and I’m very excited that he’s going to be here for the long haul,” said head coach Preston Spradlin.
Morehead State has tallied 74 wins in Mattox’s four seasons with the program. During that span, the Eagles have won 41 Ohio Valley Conference games, and have won 10-plus games and participated in the league tournament all four years. Twice, he has helped Morehead State reach the 20-win plateau.
“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity to continue working at Morehead State University under Preston Spradlin,” said Mattox. “I am very excited about Coach Spradlin’s continued vision for this program. I have worked with Coach for the last three years and have great respect for him, not only as a coach, but as a person. I am eager to continue to build upon the momentum we have going with this program.”
Prior to his time at Morehead State, Mattox helped NAIA school Emmanuel (Ga.) to a 49-21 record in two years as an assistant men’s basketball coach from 2011-13.
Mattox started his playing career at Division II member Anderson (S.C.) and finished at Emmanuel. As a senior, he helped the Lions to a 26-8 overall record and Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament championship.
Mattox earned four letters in basketball at Oconee County High School (Ga.). As a senior, he helped the Warriors to a Class AAA Region 8 title and berth in the Class AAA Elite Eight. He notched Second-Team All-Northeast Georgia honors his final two years.
“He has a great temperament about himself, he never gets rattled, and he’s very calculated, organized, and efficient in what he does. He has a great relationship with all of our players and their families, so that just helps with our transition because he understands how things should be done around here,” said Spradlin.
Mattox earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Emmanuel in 2011 and master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia (Calif.) in 2013.
