University of New Haven men’s basketball coach Ted Hotaling has announced the addition of Jim McCarthy to the 2017-18 coaching staff. McCarthy comes to West Haven by way of Towson University where he was an assistant with the Tigers for the past four season.
McCarthy played a key role in helping the Tigers to a trio of 20-win seasons over his tenure, including 2013-14 where Towson posted its most successful season at the Division I level, recording 25 wins and advancing to the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT). This past season, McCarthy helped lead the Tigers to a 20-13 overall record, including a win over Northeastern University in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. At Towson, he was involved with all aspects of the program including recruiting, scouting, player development and scheduling.
Prior to Towson, McCarthy spent seven seasons at CAA rival Northeastern University where he helped lead the Huskies to the CAA Championship in 2012-13. While with the Huskies, NU also made a pair of NIT appearances. At Northeastern, he served as the recruiting coordinator, scouting director and was responsible for working with the perimeter players. Overall, McCarthy led four guards to earn All-CAA honors in his seven seasons.
Prior to joining the Huskies staff, McCarthy spent three years as an assistant coach at Yale where he was active in recruiting, scoring, game preparation and practice planning. While working with the Bulldogs perimeter players, he helped lead a pair to All-Ivy League accolades.
The two years previous to his tenure at Yale, McCarthy spent two seasons as an Assistant Coach at Williams College where he helped lead the team to the 2002-03 NCAA Division II National Championship. During his time at Williams, the Ephs produced an All-American, a Final Four Most Outstanding Player and three all-conference performers, while posting a combined record of 53-7.
A 2001 graduate of Hamilton College, McCarthy played for Tom Murphy, one of the all-time winningest NCAA Division III coaches, and was an All-UCAA selection in 2000. At Hamilton, McCarthy earned the school’s Ned Doyle Award for leadership, athletic success and academic achievement. He helped lead the Continentals to a 70-37 overall record, four postseason appearances, including two NCAA Sweet Sixteen berths.
McCarthy and his wife, Katie, have three children; sons Nathan and Colin and daughter Hannah.
