Meier named Head Basketball Coach at Cuyahoga CC

Cuyahoga Community College announced the hiring of Ryan Meier as the Triceratops’ next men’s basketball head coach today, August 10, 2026.

Meier had multiple stops in the collegiate ranks, most recently returning to his alma mater of Palomar College as associate head coach in September 2024. The Comets amassed a 36-23 record in Meier’s two years on staff with trips to the California Community College Athletic Association Regional Playoffs each season. The most recent stint was Meier’s second with the Comets, with him getting his start in coaching at his alma mater for the 2000-2001 season.

Before his second stint at Palomar, Meier spent a season as an Assistant Coach at NCAA Division II school California State-San Marcos, where the Cougars went 14-14 in the 2023-24 season. Before that, Meier had one season at MiraCosta College, with the Spartans finishing with a 12-16 mark.

A majority of Meier’s career was spent leading the program at La Jolla Country Day High School in San Diego, Calif. from 2006 to 2020. While there, Meier’s Torreys posted a 226-186 record in 14 seasons with two San Diego Section championships in 2011-12 and 2018-19 and a California Division III state championship in 2018-19. Meier also earned the 2016 SDPI San Diego Section Coach of the Year award. The Torreys posted five 20-win seasons in 14 years under Meier with five Southern California Regionals appearances.

Six players under Meier at La Jolla Country Day went on to play at four-year schools – Ryan Langborg (Princeton), Alex Cho (MIT), Josiah Esselstrom (Westmont), Bruce Edwards (Ursinius), Jayson Taylor (Tufts), and Ben Daugherty (Elon).

Prior to moving to La Jolla Country Day, Meier spent three seasons at Francis Parker School in San Diego, winning 58 games with the Lancers. After his departure from La Jolla Country Day, Meier spent a half-season at Mount Miguel High School following the resignation of the Matadors’ prior head coach. At Mount Miguel, Meier steered the Matadors to a 6-22 record.

Meier also worked in the club and semi-pro areas, as co-founder and head coach of Coastal Elite Basketball from 2004-07, and with quick stints in 2017 and 2025. He also spent spring and summer as head coach for the All In Elite and West Coast Elite club teams in 2023 and head coach over the summers of 2019-22 with Swish Pro-Am.

Off the court, Meier served on the San Diego CIF Men’s Coaches Advisory Council for 14 years and he was involved in multiple community service and diversity and inclusion efforts, including Increase the Peace, Coaches Diversity Alliance and Coaches for Equity.

Meier played collegiately with Palomar College, earning two All-Conference bids with the Comets. Following his time at Palomar, Meier was a commit to the University of Alaska-Anchorage under head coach Charlie Bruns.

Meier earned his Associate of Arts in General Studies from Palomar College and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from California State-San Marcos, where he was a dean’s list recipient. He is currently working towards a Master in Coaching and Exercise Science from Concordia University-Irvine.
