Following the most successful run in program history, Dan Miller announced his resignation as LeTourneau University men’s basketball coach.
“It’s been an amazing seven years, guiding the LeTourneau men’s basketball program,” Miller said. “My family and I are grateful for all the wonderful relationships, generosity and memories we have had here. I want to thank (Director of Athletics) Terri Deike, (President-turned Chancellor) Dr. (Dale) Lunsford, (new President) Dr. (Steve) Mason and the entire LeTourneau community for all the support, and believing in us. I can’t put into words how thankful I am for all the past players, current players and basketball staff. I love those guys so much, and it was hard to tell them I was leaving. However, I am proud of our accomplishments, and know we return a great team with everyone back, so the program is in excellent shape as one of the best in the region.”
Miller’s teams went 110-64 with two trips to the NCAA Division III National Tournament, winning an American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament title in 2019-20, an ASC East Division regular season title in 2017-18, three 20-plus win seasons and six consecutive trips to the ASC postseason tournament. His 110 victories are the most in program history. He coached the unanimous NCAA Division III Player of the Year, Nate West, in 2019-20. His team beat Hanover College, 85-77, in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament, putting the finishing touches on a school-record 24 victories.
“Seven years ago, I felt God tugging at my heart for a new challenge, and that was to bring LeTourneau basketball to the top of the ASC,” Miller said. “It was a big challenge, and through our core principles of Romans 12:10, taking care of the basketball, sharing the basketball, and dominating the effort plays, we did exactly that. We are proud to have the highest winning percentage in the ASC over the past five seasons, and of course, of the conference championship and NCAA Tournaments. However, what I am most proud of is the true family culture that permeates through our basketball program.”
Miller accepted the head boys basketball coach position at San Marcos High School, where he will also teach physical education. His wife, Monica, was also offered a teaching position at the school.
“We are extremely sad to see Dan Miller go, not only because he helped elevate the men’s basketball program at LeTourneau to unprecedented heights, but also because of the culture and character he established with his teams,” Deike said. “He has had such a profound impact on the basketball program here, while modeling his teams after what LeTourneau University stands for. We are grateful to have had him here as part of the LeTourneau family these last seven years, and we wish he and his family the best as they take this next journey.”
While beginning the transition to San Marcos, Miller will remain with the university in a commuting role until June.
“With all of our kids in college or graduated, God is sending us on a new mission,” Miller said. “We are very excited about our opportunity and challenge in San Marcos, but we are truly thankful and blessed to have had such a wonderful experience here at LeTourneau.
“I am also thankful for James Wallace for being an amazing assistant coach for these seven years, and also for Zakarius Wells for volunteering and helping the program these past five years.”
Miller’s team won 22 games in 2016-17. The YellowJackets won 23 games in 2019-20. He was named National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III South Region Coach of the Year in 2018. He was voted the ASC East Coach of the Year in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
Prior to taking over the LETU program in 2014-15, the Brillion, Wisconsin native guided Katy Seven Lakes High School to a 218-70 record over nine seasons. His teams made two regional appearances, won four district titles, enjoyed three 30-plus win seasons, and qualified for the state tournament seven straight years. A 2000 graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato, Miller served as an assistant coach at the University of Southwest Minnesota from 2003-04.
