O’Dowd named Assistant Basketball Coach at Southwestern Oklahoma State

SWOSU Men’s Basketball Head Coach Brett Weiberg has announced the hiring of Dan O’Dowd as his assistant.

“I am so pleased and thankful that we have been able to hire Coach O’Dowd,” said Coach Weiberg. “I have known him since 2006 and in every interaction, I have always walked away impressed.  He possesses great character, and our players will learn way more than basketball from him.  He will be such a good resource and example for our players concerning things that are bigger than basketball.”

O’Dowd comes to Weatherford from Bethany College in Kansas, where he served as the head men’s basketball coach and an assistant athletic director since 2017.

He has spent 37 years collectively coaching basketball, with over 25 of those at the NCAA Division I level. Before his head coaching days, he held various assistant roles at North Texas, Texas-San Antonio, Arizona State, Mississippi, and Kansas State.

O’Dowd also possesses postseason experience. In his eight years at Arizona State, the Sun Devils qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2003 and the NIT in 2000 and 2005. While acting as the associate head coach for UTSA, O’Dowd helped lead the Roadrunners to a 2011 Southland Conference Tournament Championship to claim an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. They went on to capture the first tournament win in program history and advanced to face, at the time, No. 1-seeded Ohio State.

Weiberg continued. “Coach is a phenomenal basketball coach, communicator, and recruiter.  He has experience at literally every level of amateur basketball and has had success at each level he has coached.  His knowledge will be of great benefit to me and to Bulldog Basketball.  Bulldog Nation is going to love Coach Dan O’Dowd and I look forward to working with him.”

The Lakewood, Colorado native also holds administration experience with nearly 10 years of assistant athletic director duties between his time at Bethany College and Barton Community College. He also served on the NABC International Recruiting Committee for six years in San Antonio.

Prior to his coaching career, O’Dowd was a cross country and track athlete at Bethany College. Upon graduation, he spent three seasons as an assistant coach in the high school ranks before jumping to become a graduate assistant at Kansas State from 1989-91.

O’Dowd obtained a bachelor’s degree from Bethany College in 1986.
