UMBC Director of Athletics Tim Hall announced today that Aki Thomas, head coach of the UMBC basketball team, has been relieved of his duties.
Thomas recently completed his fourth year as head coach with an overall record of 28-95. UMBC finished the 2015-16 campaign 7-25 overall and 3-13 (9th) in the America East Conference. Last evening, eighth-seeded UMBC led top-seeded Stony Brook at the midpoint of the second half, but fell in the America East quarterfinals, 86-76, at IFCU Arena.
“I appreciate the contributions that Aki Thomas and his staff have made to our program,” Hall said. “Coach Thomas represented UMBC with a positive attitude and outstanding values during his entire tenure at UMBC. He is an exceptional person, and I wish him success in his future endeavors.”
Thomas came to UMBC as an assistant coach in the fall of 2007 and was a member of the team that led the Retrievers to the 2007-08 America East regular season and tournament titles, and the school’s lone NCAA Division I Championships appearance. He served in that role for five seasons before taking over as acting head coach on Oct. 10, 2012. Thomas earned the permanent title on the eve of the 2013 America East Tournament.
