Craig Carter, renowned as a top recruiter over more than a decade as a Division I assistant coach, has joined Bill Courtney‘s Cornell men’s basketball coaching staff. Carter replaces Marlon Sears, who accepted the head coaching position at Montclair State in May. HoopDirt.com first reported this move on June 15th.
Carter most recently was an assistant coach at Longwood, helping the Lancers advance to the Big South tournament semifinals after upsetting top-seeded Charleston Southern. He had previous successful stops as an assistant coach at Siena (2005-06, 2010-13) and Rutgers (2006-10) and under former Big Red assistant coach Joe Burke at Skidmore College (2013-14). He has also served as director of basketball operations at both UNC Greensboro (2003-04) and Massachusetts (2004-05).
Carter has assisted with nearly every facet of a program during his career, from game preparation and on-court coaching to implementation offseason player workouts, player assessment and development, academic monitoring and game scheduling.
Among the players he has recruited are former MAAC Player of the Year Kenny Hasbrouck and first-team selection Edwin Ubiles, the first two players in Siena history to appear on NBA rosters.
Prior to breaking into the Division I ranks, Carter held a variety of coaching and scouting positions at various levels. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach of the men’s basketball team at Norwalk Community College in 1998 and followed with a two-year stint as an assistant coach of the boys’ varsity team at Lincoln HS in Brooklyn from 1999-2001. During that time, he also worked as a scout for Talented Amateurs Around the Globe (TAAG) in Tampa, Fla. and was a video coordinator with the WNBA’s New York Liberty in the summer of 2001. His final coaching stop before Siena was a two-year campaign as assistant men’s coach at Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Carter enjoyed a successful playing career as a guard at Rutgers (1987-91), serving as a two-year team captain. He helped lead the Scarlet Knights to NCAA tournaments appearances in 1989 and 1991. He was an Atlantic 10 all-tournament selection in 1989 after helping the Scarlet Knights win the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
A 1992 graduate of Rutgers, Carter earned his bachelor’s degree in English. He also spent time in the professional sector as an elementary school teacher in Brooklyn, N.Y., a financial analyst for foreign exchange trading at General Electric and a financial analyst confirmation specialist for foreign exchange trading at Chase Manhattan Bank.
