Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh announced today that FGCU has released head men’s basketball coach Michael Fly from the remainder of his contract and will seek new leadership for the program.
“With deep appreciation for Coach Fly’s numerous sacrifices, efforts and contributions to FGCU over the past eleven years (on and off the court), in a gut wrenching decision, I have decided that we need to transition to a different path and will be commencing a search for a new head men’s basketball coach,” said Kavanagh. “We extremely value Michael’s friendship and love of the Green & Blue and wish him all the best personally and professionally in his future endeavors.”
Should FGCU accept an invitation to play in a postseason tournament such as The College Basketball Classic, Fly will have the opportunity to remain in place to coach the team during that time.
Fly has compiled a 55-59 (.482) overall record and a 30-27 (.526) ASUN mark in his four seasons as head coach since being named to the role in April 2018. In his overall tenure since 2011-12 as both an assistant coach and head coach, the Eagles were 208-142 (.594). That includes six ASUN Tournament Finals appearances, three NCAA Tournament victories, three ASUN Tournament titles and three ASUN Regular-Season Championships, two berths in the NIT, a CIT appearance and a run to the Sweet 16.
He is the fourth head coach in program history following Dave Balza (2002-11), Andy Enfield (2011-13), and Joe Dooley (2013-18).
