Presbyterian College and head men’s basketball coach Dustin Kerns announced Wednesday the addition of Bob Szorc as assistant coach. He will start immediately and will replace Tommy Brown, who left in June.

“We are extremely excited about adding Bob Szorc to our coaching staff and the Presbyterian family, said Kerns, who is entering his second season at the helm of the Blue Hose. “Bob has an incredible reputation as a person, coach, and recruiter. He came highly recommended by several people in the coaching world and I’m excited about the additions he will bring to our players and staff. Coach Szorc most importantly aligns with our staff, core values, and the standard of our program with his character. We are thrilled about adding Bob Szorc to Clinton and Presbyterian College.”

Szorc just completed his fourth season with Delta State with last season as the Associate Head Coach.  Over the past four seasons with the Statesmen, Szorc has helped Delta State to 72 wins, including a 23-9 record in 2017 and an appearance in the NCAA South Region tournament semifinals, the 15th time in school history that the Statesmen have made an NCAA postseason appearance. Delta State was the third-winningest program in the NCAA South Region in the last four years and was one of only two schools in the Gulf South Conference that have averaged at least 20 wins per season during that same time frame.

Delta State was the only school in the conference to make the league semifinals each of the last three years, going 40-24 during that span.  In 2016 and 2017, the team led the league in field goal defense, and allowed just 63.5 points this past year.

“Humbled and excited are two words that describe the opportunity that Coach Dustin Kerns and Presbyterian College have provided,” said Szorc. “It is an honor to work for Coach Kerns and alongside Coach Young and Moynihan to serve the players, program, and the school.  A big thank you also to Coach Jim Boone at Delta State who has had a tremendous impact on my career.”

At Delta State Szorc was involved in all aspects of the Statesmen program and more specifically with strength and conditioning, on the court coaching and post player development, basketball operations, and the scouting of opponents.

Szorc was the Head Coach at Wheaton Warrenville South High School and directed all aspects of the basketball program, including fundraising, fall and spring skill development for youth, summer camps, and the development of the program’s feeder schools.

Prior to Wheaton Warrenville South, Robert was the head coach at Alleman Catholic High School in Rock Island, Ill. At Alleman Catholic, Szorc directed the program to back-to-back regionals and advanced to the Sweet 16 in only his second year as a head coach. He inherited a program that was coming off a five-win season and led the Pioneers to a 10-game improvement and 15 wins in year two.

He has worked the summer tour at some of the nation’s best teaching camps, the Snow Valley Basketball School in Waverly, Iowa, and Future Stars in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Robert is a graduate of St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., and Benet Academy in Lisle, Ill.
