HoopDirt.com mentioned this move in the Daily Dirt on 5/10…it’s now been made official, former Butler University standout Tyler Lewis has joined the Furman men’s basketball staff as the program’s video coordinator.
“Tyler is an excellent addition to our staff,” said Furman Head Coach Bob Richey. “His blend of character, playing experience at the highest level, and being a part of the Butler culture will bring immediate value to our program. He has great recruiting experience from his own individual process as well as watching his dad Rick operate one of the best recruiting services in the country with Phenom Hoops.”
Lewis averaged 6.5 points and four assists per game as a senior in 2016-17 to lead the Bulldogs to a 25-9 record, second place finish in the Big East Conference and NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance. The Bulldogs’ point guard ranked third nationally and paced the Big East in assist/turnover ratio. He scored in double figures six times during his senior season, including a season-best 16 points versus Northern Colorado.
“Tyler will serve as our video coordinator, but he also will be heavily involved in our recruiting organizational process as well as our personal development program,” according to Richey. “We are really excited about adding Tyler and Ali to our program.”
Lewis began his career at North Carolina State, where he helped the Wolfpack to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2013 and 2014. After transferring to Butler and sitting out the 2014-15 campaign, the 5-foot-11 guard contributed 5.9 points per game and shot a team-high 85.2% from the foul line for a 2016 Bulldogs squad that reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to work at Furman University and continue the success of the men’s basketball program,” said Lewis. “Furman is a high academic institution that stresses character, integrity, and academics. I look forward to helping the staff and student-athletes reach the team goals. When I met Coach Richey, I was equally impressed with his vision and where he wanted to take the Furman basketball program.”
The Statesville, N.C., native concluded his high school career at Oak Hill Academy (Va.). In 2012, he earned McDonald’s All-America Team honors and was named Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 12.0 points and 7.9 assists per game to help Oak Hill to a 44-0 record.
Lewis graduated from Butler in 2017 with a degree in marketing. He and his fiancee, Ali Burgiss, plan to wed in June of 2017.
