Following-up from my report over the weekend. The resignation of Danny Young at D2 Montevallo is now official. Here’s the press release:
Montevallo head men’s basketball coach Danny Young has stepped down after 19 seasons at the helm. Young leaves the program as the most decorated head coach in Montevallo men’s basketball history. Under his guidance, the Falcons amassed a record of 372-209 (.640), won five-conference Coach of the Year awards, and was named the NABC Region Coach of the Year twice. His teams made 11 Division II tournament appearances, including advancing to the Sweet 16 eight times, the Elite 8 three times and played in the national title game in 2012.
During Young’s tenure, the Falcons had nine 20-win seasons. He was named the Gulf South Conference East Division Coach of the Decade for 2000-2010. After the Falcons moved to the Peach Belt Conference, he led Montevallo to its first PBC regular season championship and its fourth straight West Division championship while guiding the Falcons to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the 10th time in 12 years during the 2014-15 season.
“We would like to thank Coach Young for a great career at Montevallo,” said UM Director of Athletics Mark Richard. “He has hung every men’s basketball banner in Trustmark Arena. We wish Danny and his family all the best.”
Before taking over at Montevallo in 2003, Young spent two seasons as the head coach at Salem (WV), where he went 51-11 (.823). He also was an assistant at Wheeling Jesuit, Nebraska Omaha, and Grand Canyon.
A national search for Young’s replacement will begin immediately.
