Portland State Men’s Basketball added Gabe Palmquist-Clark to its coaching staff for the 2025-26 season. Palmquist-Clark is a native of Portland with more than a decade of collegiate coaching experience.
“Gabe comes highly recommended from several coaches,” said Vikings Coach Jase Coburn. “I have gotten to know Gabe over a period of time in coaching and I know from our conversations over the years that he is very detailed and will work extremely hard for us. He is also a great recruiter and has worked at several successful programs.
“Being originally from Portland is always good. It means a lot to our program that we have someone with a great desire to be at Portland State.”
“I am extremely excited to be back in my hometown and working with the Portland State Men’s Basketball team,” said Palmquist-Clark. “Coach Coburn runs an exceptional program and it’s exhilarating to be on such an elite staff. I look forward to building on what this staff and players have done so far.”
Most recently, Palmquist-Clark spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Academy of Art in San Francisco. The Knights won the Pacific West Conference title in 2024 and placed third in 2025. ART U also made an NCAA II post-season appearance in 2023 and won the PacWest Tournament Championship in 2022.
While at Academy of Art, Palmquist-Clark assisted in coaching Latrell Williams to become the first PacWest player to earn both Player of the Year and Defender of the Year in the same season.
Palmquist-Clark has had a handful of other coaching stops, including Western Oregon in 2015-16. He was part of the Final Four run for the Wolves basketball team that season. Western Oregon capped that historic campaign with a 31-4 record after winning the GNAC regular season conference title, GNAC Tournament Championship, West Regional title, and finishing with a No. 3 national ranking. Beyond the hardwood, Palmquist-Clark worked to engage the community as the coordinator of the Junior Wolves program and camp director.
In addition to his NCAA Division II experience, Palmquist-Clark assisted at various other junior college programs including Vincennes University, Kilgore College, and Lane Community College.
Palmquist-Clark was a four-year scholar athlete at Portland’s Cleveland High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Sports Business from the University of Oregon in 2014 and later graduated from Western Oregon with his master’s degree in Science Education (Curriculum and Instruction) in 2016.
