Palumbo promoted to Assistant Basketball Coach at Providence

Providence College Men’s Basketball Head Coach Kim English announced the promotion of Matt Palumbo to assistant coach.  Palumbo spent the last year at Providence as the special assistant to the head coach prior to working under English for two years at George Mason.

“Matt is very deserving of this promotion,” Head Coach Kim English said. “He is one of the most dedicated and driven individuals I have worked with during my career.  We are fortunate to have him working with our team. He has all the intangibles to be a successful head coach someday.”

In his first season with the Friars, Palumbo worked with many aspects of the program, including scouting, practice, workouts, analytics, video, report preparation, game strategy and player development.  He was instrumental in the development of Friar guard Devin Carter, who was the 13th selection (lottery pick) in the 2024 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings.  Carter made significant improvement between 2023 and 2024.  His field goal percentage (.427 to .473), three-point shooting (.299 to .377), rebounds (4.9 to 8.7), assists (81 to 120) and points (13.0 to 19.7) all increased between his sophomore and junior seasons.  This improvement helped him become just the second Friar ever to be named BIG EAST Player of the Year in 2024.

Palumbo spent two seasons as the graduate assistant at George Mason prior to arriving in Providence.  As the graduate assistant at George Mason, he worked with player development, scouting and on-campus recruiting.

Before working at George Mason, Palumbo was an undergraduate manager for four years for the men’s basketball team at the University of Virginia.  In his role he assisted with many facets of the programs, including recruiting videos and practice films.  He also served as a scout team player for the 2019 NCAA Champion Cavaliers.  He saw action in Virginia’s 65-34 win over James Madison on November 10, 2019.

Palumbo also has worked with USA Basketball as a member of their support staff.  He assisted with the Junior National Team in the summer and fall of 2019.  In May of 2022, Palumbo worked the U-19 tryouts.

A native of Charlottesville, Va., Palumbo received his undergraduate degree in Public Policy and Leadership from the University of Virginia in 2021.
