Phil Martelli, Jr., has been named director of men’s basketball operations at Saint Joseph’s, it was announced today.

Martelli, Jr., the oldest son of head coach Phil Martelli, returns to SJU where he was a four-year player for the Hawks, graduating from the University in 2003.

He joins the Saint Joseph’s staff after spending the 2016-17 season as assistant coach with the Delaware 87ers, the affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Developmental League.

Martelli, Jr., brings a wealth of Division I coaching experience to the Hawks, with his most recent position being a five-year stint at the University of Delaware. During his time there, the Blue Hens recorded their most-ever conference wins over five seasons (55) and captured the CAA regular-season and tournament titles in 2013-14, making the school’s first NCAA appearance in 15 years.

From 2006 to 2011, Martelli, Jr., was an assistant coach at Niagara University, helping the Purple Eagles to a 95-69 record in his five years, including the 2007 MAAC Tournament title and a victory in the NCAA Tournament.

He also served in the same position at Manhattan College in 2005-06, while beginning his career in 2003 at Central Connecticut State University as the youngest (22) full-time assistant coach in Division I at that time.
