Pitino signs contract extension at St. John’s

St. John’s has announced that Hall of Fame head coach Rick Pitino has signed a new agreement that will keep him in Queens through the end of the decade. Pitino, who was originally hired in March 2023 on a six-year deal, has reportedly received a one-year extension through the 2029-30 season, along with a raise that will make him the second-highest paid coach in the Big East behind UConn’s Danny Hurley.

“Coach Pitino has changed the culture of our program, and we are thrilled to have him leading St. John’s moving forward,” AD Ed Kull said in a statement.

In three seasons, Pitino has led a major turnaround for the Red Storm, guiding the program to back-to-back Big East regular season and tournament championships. St. John’s also advanced to the Sweet 16 this season for the first time in 27 years. The 73-year-old reached his 900th career win this season and holds an 81-25 record at St. John’s, including consecutive 30-win campaigns.
