Quarles joins Arkansas State Basketball Staff

Arkansas State men’s basketball head coach Bryan Hodgson announced Wednesday that Jamie Quarles will join his staff as an assistant coach. Quarles spent the past six seasons as an assistant coach at Buffalo and brings over 10 seasons of collegiate coaching experience to the sideline for the Red Wolves.

“We’re really excited to get Jamie Quarles on staff here at Arkansas State,” said Hodgson. “Jamie is one of the best guys in collegiate coaching and I’ve had a business and working relationship with him for almost 15 years now, including two seasons at Buffalo. He’s had successful stops at multiple different levels and is widely known as a great offensive mind and great recruiter. Jamie is one of the best people I know and he and his wife Porcsha will be a great addition to the Jonesboro community.”

Quarles, among 12 participants in the Jay Bilas Coaches Leadership Program last summer, most recently spent the last six seasons as an assistant coach at Buffalo, including the 2022-23 season as associate head coach. He coached a MAC Player of the Year, three MAC Defensive Players of the Year, three MAC Sixth Man of the Year, 15 All-MAC selections and five MAC All-Defensive Team selections. In his six seasons with the Bulls, Quarles helped the squad to a combined 129-62 (.578) record and a 76-32 (.704) mark in Mid-American Conference action, including two regular season titles and two conference tournament crowns.

“I am beyond excited to join the A-State family,” Quarles said. “Over the last 15 years, I’ve been blessed to work with some of the best basketball minds in the business and even better human beings. I’m happy I get to continue that streak. Coach Hodgson is a great ball coach, leader, and even better person. I’m ecstatic to be a part of this team and I’m ready to get to work. My wife Porcsha and I are thrilled to join the Jonesboro community!”

This past season, Quarles aided Buffalo to top-75 rankings in fast break points (15.3), scoring offense (77.5), rebounds per game (37.8), offensive rebounds per game (11.8), assists per game (14.7), bench points per game (24.1) and steals per game (7.9). Sophomore Curtis Jones had a break-out season earning All-MAC honors while averaging 15.0 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists with a team-high 75 3-pointers made.

In 2021-22, Quarles helped the Bulls to a 19-11 record. Along with a trip to the MAC Tournament, Jeenathan Williams was named to the First Team All-MAC list, as Ronaldo Segu and Josh Mballa were Second Team All-MAC honorees. In the 2020-21 season, Quarles helped lead the Bulls to a 16-9 record in a COVID-19 shortened season.  The Bulls earned a trip to the MAC Championship game and an appearance in the NIT, just the second in school history. Three UB players earned second-team All-MAC honors, while Josh Mballa was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year.

In 2019-20, Quarles helped lead the Bulls to a 20-12 record, overseeing the Buffalo offense, which ranked among the best in the Mid-American Conference. As the primary guards coach, Quarles also coached Ronaldo Segu, who was named the MAC Sixth Man of the Year and Davonta Jordan, who was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year.  Junior guard Jayvon Graves was named a First-Team All-MAC selection.

Quarles helped guide the Bulls to their most successful season in school history as Buffalo finished the year 32-4, while being ranked in the Top 25 for nearly the entire 2018-19 season. The 32 wins were a school and Mid-American Conference record, while the Bulls made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for a second straight season. Following the year, a number of Bulls earned All-MAC honors, including CJ Massinburg, who was named the MAC Player of the Year and Dontay Caruthers, who was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year.

In his first season with the Bulls, Quarles helped guide the Bulls to their first-ever outright MAC Regular Season title, while the Bulls also won the MAC Tournament title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  Quarles worked with a dynamic group of guards, including Massinburg, who tied the school record for points in a season with 611 and was named an All-MAC First Team selection.  Quarles also assisted in the development of MAC Tournament MVP Wes Clark and second-team selection Jeremy Harris.  Six of UB’s top seven scorers in 2017-18 were guards.

After playing four seasons at Augusta from 2004-08, Quarles picked up the clipboard and joined the coaching staff on August 30, 2011. Quarles had been the top assistant for six seasons from 2011-17 and has helped keep the Jaguars in the national spotlight. Quarles aided the Jags to a 17-11 overall record (12-6 in PBC) during his first year coaching in 2011-12 and Augusta had a winning season in each year Quarles was on staff.

Augusta won the 2017 Peach Belt Conference East Division title and had the best regular-season record across the entire league in the 2016-17 season. A senior in 2016-17, Keshun Sherrill capped off a historic career by becoming the PBC’s all-time leading scorer with 2,333 points. He was a four-time All-American and was named the NCAA Southeast Region and PBC Player of the Year in 2017

Competing as Augusta University for the first time in the 2015-16 season, the Jaguars earned a No. 10 NCAA Southeast Region ranking and HERO Sports named Augusta University men’s hoops the Best Program in the State. The Jags reached the PBC Tournament Championship game and Keshun Sherrill was named All-District and All-Conference as he surpassed career 1,000 points.

In 2014-15, Quarles helped coached the Jags to a 23-7 overall record and a 15-4 mark in the Peach Belt. The team reached its 11th NCAA Tournament all time. Sherrill was named All-American and All-District by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC), and earned All-Region by Daktronics and All-Conference for the Peach Belt.

In 2012-13, he aided a team that began the year on a 6-0 run and eventually made a quarterfinal appearance at the PBC Tournament. Helping coach the team as Georgia Regents University for the first time, the Jags finished 24-8 overall and 15-4 in the Peach Belt Conference, taking second place in the East Division.

Sherrill was named Peach Belt Freshman of the Year, while senior KJ Sherrill and Ryan Weems earned all-conference honors. The Jags reached their 10th NCAA Tournament – beating Anderson in the quarterfinals at the buzzer to advance to the NCAA Southeast Regional Semifinals.

Quarles was a senior on the 2007-08 squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s National Championship game and during his career he was part of 85 victories.

A native of Augusta, Ga., Quarles spent the 2009-10 season at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va., where he served as head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball (Red) team and a health and physical education teacher. Under his leadership, Oak Hill posted a 44-16 record.

A 2008 graduate of Augusta State University with a B.S. in Education, Quarles achieved his master’s degree in Kinesiology & Health Science in May 2013. He is married to Porcsha Quarles.
