Iona University men’s basketball head coach Dan Geriot announced the hiring of Ronald Ramon as an assistant coach for the Gaels. A Bronx native with a decorated playing and coaching background, Ramon joins the Maroon & Gold after four successful seasons at Fordham University.
“Ronald brings a high-level basketball IQ, elite player development experience, and a tremendous ability to connect with student-athletes,” said Geriot. “He has won at every level-college, pro, and internationally-and knows what it takes to elevate a program. We’re excited to welcome him, Reba, Ronald Jr., and Raiden to the Iona family.”
Ramon joins Iona following a standout four-year tenure on the staff at Fordham University (2020-2025), where he was instrumental in one of the most impressive program turnarounds in recent college basketball. His leadership helped guide the Rams to consecutive Atlantic 10 Tournament wins and numerous historic achievements.
In 2022-23, Fordham enjoyed its best season in more than three decades, finishing 25-8 overall and 12-6 in conference play-both program records. The Rams tied for second in the Atlantic 10 regular season standings, earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament for the first time ever, and advanced to the semifinals for just the second time in school history. That year also saw Head Coach Keith Urgo named A-10 Coach of the Year, while three players-Darius Quisenberry, Khalid Moore, and Kyle Rose-earned postseason conference honors.
During the 2023-24 campaign, the Rams continued building momentum, posting signature wins over reigning NIT champion North Texas at Barclays Center, Atlantic 10 champion Duquesne, and their first-ever road win at Saint Louis. Kyle Rose earned his second consecutive A-10 All-Defensive Team selection-the first player in Fordham history to do so.
In his first season with the Rams in 2021-22, Ramon helped engineer a remarkable 14-win improvement from the previous year, guiding Fordham to a 16-16 record and its first trip to the Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals since 2007. The team’s defense ranked 41st nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency per KenPom, the highest in program history at the time.
Ramon began his coaching career in 2019 at his alma mater, the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as an assistant director of basketball operations.
As a player, Ramon carved out a distinguished 11-year professional career in South America, with stops in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and Venezuela. He also had a decade-long tenure (2009-2019) with the Dominican Republic National Team, representing his heritage on the global stage in multiple international tournaments, including the 2014 and 2019 FIBA World Cups.
At Pitt, Ramon helped the Panthers to a 101-35 record over his four seasons, which included four NCAA Tournament appearances and a Big East Tournament championship in 2008. He concluded his career with 1,096 points, 339 assists, 254 rebounds, and 100 steals, while ranking among the program’s all-time leaders in three-point shooting: 4th in both made threes (233) and attempts (590), 7th in percentage (.395), and 5th in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.04). He earned Big East All-Freshman Team honors in 2005 and posted a career-best 8.8 points per game as a junior while shooting 45.1% from three-point range.
Off the court, Ramon is known for his passion for mentorship and commitment to player development. He and his wife, Reba, a former Pitt softball standout and All-Big East honoree, are the proud parents of two sons, Ronald Jr. and Raiden. Reba graduated as the Panthers’ all-time leader in runs scored and walks and remains among the program’s top performers in several offensive categories.
Ramon joins a dynamic Iona coaching staff under Geriot that includes General Manager Craig Moore and Assistant Coaches Patrick Wallace, Kris Saulny, and Michael Thompson.
