After an extensive national search, Georgia Highlands College (GHC) has found its next men’s basketball head coach close to home. Director of Athletics Dr. Nicole Levering announced today that Reco Dawson will take the helm of the Chargers’ program.
“I’m excited to welcome Reco Dawson as the new head men’s basketball coach at Georgia Highlands College!” said Dr. Levering. “His proven success and leadership—both on and off the court—made it clear that he has the knowledge, passion, and vision to guide our student-athletes in becoming the best versions of themselves. He is exactly what GHC needs.”
Dawson brings a wealth of experience and a championship pedigree to GHC. Most recently at Shelton State Community College, Dawson previously served as head coach at Central Georgia Technical College for a decade. During his tenure there, he led the program to three consecutive Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) championships in 2018, 2019, and 2020, earning Coach of the Year honors each of those seasons.
His coaching résumé also includes assistant coaching roles at Georgia Southwestern State University and South Georgia Technical College.
“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead the men’s basketball program at Georgia Highlands College,” Dawson said. “There are big things on the horizon, and I am honored to be a part of the Athletics staff. Every day we will work to build something bigger than ourselves—because the real reward is helping players grow into successful individuals.”
Beyond his on-court accomplishments, Dawson has demonstrated a strong commitment to academic excellence. Over his 13 years as a head coach, he has mentored 35 conference All-Academic student-athletes and four NJCAA All-Academic honorees.
“I’m excited for what’s ahead and proud to represent Georgia Highlands College,” Dawson added.
With Dawson’s leadership, GHC looks forward to a new era of excellence in men’s basketball—both in competition and in the classroom.
