CSUN Men’s Basketball has named Scott Sommer as the team’s Director of Basketball Operations for the the 2016-17 year. Possessing recruiting, scouting and coaching experience, Sommer will handle the day-to-day operations of the team, organize team travel and complete administrative duties.
“Scott has a personality and a demeanor that blends well with our staff,” said head coach Reggie Theus. “He is a grinder. Since he came out of the juco ranks, he doesn’t have a limit of the time needed to put in the work necessary. The thing that I like also is that he wants to be a coach. I’m very excited to have him as a member of our staff.”
A San Diego, CA, native, Sommer returns to Southern California after spending last season in Poplarville, MS, as an assistant coach to the Pearl River Community College men’s basketball team. With Sommer on the sidelines, the Wildcats enjoyed an outstanding 16-win campaign as the team capped off the year with a Mississippi Association of Community & Junior Colleges South Division Championship.
Sommer completed a host of responsibilities at PRCC including handling recruitment, scouting and administration with the team. He also helped PRCC host an inaugural Thanksgiving Shootout, district all-star games and a variety of fundraising promotions.
Prior to his time with Pearl River, Sommer served as a recruiting analyst and publisher for Scout.com and he coordinated events and compiled recruitment information for West Coast Hoops.
Sommer has also handled administrative responsibilities at premier national basketball camps such as Hoop Group Elite and West Virginia Jam Fest while he has coached at camps including the University of Oregon Camp.
“I’m truly blessed and fortunate to have the opportunity to join Coach Theus’ staff at CSUN,” said Sommer. “I had an excellent situation at Pearl River but being able to learn from and work alongside a former NBA legend and head coach was too difficult for me to pass up.”
Sommer graduated from Xavier University with a degree in Sport Management in 2011. An accomplished student, Sommer was a member of the Mortar Board Honor Society while attending Xavier.
“Reggie and his staff are on the verge of elevating this program to atop the Big West,” added Sommer. “Our likewise commitment towards success, on-and-off the court, will only drive the program to our ultimate goal of making the NCAA Tournament.”
