According to a report by Stadium, Chicago State head men’s basketball coach Lance Irvin intends to opt out of coaching during the 2020-21 season.
Irvin told Stadium, “I’m not comfortable coaching this season because my doctor suggested that it wasn’t the right thing to do for my health. She said it’s not worth the risk based on the current COVID pandemic.”
Irvin has twice been diagnosed with cancer, and had a bone marrow transplant back in 2012. According to the report, his doctor submitted a letter to Chicago State administrators last week. Irvin has yet to receive a response from the University.
The Chicago coaching icon has been at the helm of the Cougars for the past two seasons, where he has gone 7-54.
