According to a report from Israel’s YNetnews.com, former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach David Blatt will join Tommy Lloyd’s staff at Arizona in a “professional consultant” role. Blatt has most recently been serving as consultant with the Canadian National Team at the World Cup in the Philippines and has been part of the managing committee of Israeli pro team Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Blatt, who served as the Cavs coach from 2014-16 (83-40), has had a ton of success overseas. He is a 4x Israeli Super League Coach of the Year, and captured the 2014 Euroleague Coach of the Year. He has coached professionally in Israel, Russia, and Italy, and led the Russian national team to a bronze medal during the 2012 Summer Olympics.
According to the report, Blatt told Maccabi team officials that he would “need to step down from his position due to personal and health-related reasons. His health condition poses challenges for air travel, particularly in light of the disclosure four years ago about his ongoing battle with the prevalent neurological disorder, multiple sclerosis.”
More on this move once it becomes official.
