According to multiple reports, including one from the New York Post, St. John’s has parted ways with Men’s Basketball General Manager Matt Abdelmassih.
Abdelmassih, who has served as the program’s general manager throughout Rick Pitino’s tenure, had been on leave since the Red Storm’s December 20 game at Kentucky. There had been no public comment by St. John’s on the nature of the leave, but according to the Post, the move is believed to be connected to the school’s review of financial deals handled by Abdelmassih.
Along with Pitino and associate head coach Steve Masiello, Abdelmassih played a significant role in recruiting for the Red Storm, with the program’s annual budget believed to exceed $10 million.
A St. John’s alum, Abdelmassih previously served as an assistant coach at Nebraska and Iowa State, was a member of Chris Mullin’s staff at St. John’s, and briefly worked as a player agent before being named Pitino’s general manager.
St. John’s is currently 11-5 (4-1 Big East).
