Southern Maine Community College men’s basketball coach Matt Richards became the school’s winningest coach on January 22, 2014 when the Seawolves beat the University of Maine – Augusta at home by a score of 114-89
With this victory, Richards achieved his 200th career, breaking the previous record of 199 victories set by longtime SMCC coach and athletic director John Dakin. Dakin was coach of the Seawolves basketball team from 1968 to 1979 and athletic director from 1968 until 2002.
"I’ve been very fortunate to be surrounded by outstanding student athletes, hard-working assistant coaches and a tremendously supportive administration at the college during my time.,” Richards said. “These factors have played an integral part in the success we have had over the years and reaching this accomplishment. SMCC and Seawolves basketball are very special to me and I’m happy to share this achievement with everybody who’s helped make it possible."
Richards was hired in June 2003 as director of athletics and head men’s basketball coach. His coaching record now stands at 200-125.
