Roberts named Head Basketball Coach at D3 Belhaven

Belhaven University and Vice President and Director of Athletics, Scott Little, have announced the hiring of Boomer Roberts as the next head coach to lead the Men’s Basketball program.

“We’re excited to welcome the Roberts family to Belhaven and can’t wait to have Boomer on campus to lead our young men”, said Little. “Our program has had a lot of success recently and his career achievements in a variety of settings is an ideal match for our future goals.”

Roberts becomes the 12th head coach of the Blazers’ program and joins Belhaven with an extensive background in college basketball. Prior to joining the Blazers, Roberts spent seven seasons as the Head Coach at Purdue Northwest (NCAA Division II) where he helped build a young program with its most successful campaigns in its first nine seasons. He also helped the program earn their first ever conference tournament berth in the 2020-21 season and helped lead the Pride to four GLIAC tournament berths overall.

Prior to his time at Purdue Northwest, Roberts was the Head Coach at Trinity International University (NAIA) for four seasons where he compiled an all-time record of 84-48 (.640). While at Trinity International, Roberts spearheaded a massive turnaround for the program, leading the team from five wins in the 2013-14 campaign under his predecessor, to 30 wins in the 2016-17 season.

The 2016-17 season saw Roberts and the Trojans earn a share of the CCAC Regular Season title and saw Roberts named the league’s Coach of the Year. That team reached the quarterfinals of the NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament and Roberts was also named the NCCAA Region Co-Coach of the Year.

Before his time at TIU, Roberts was the top assistant at Vanguard University in California for four seasons. During his time at Vanguard, Roberts helped the Lions to an NAIA Division I National Championship in 2014 while also helping to recruit and coach four NAIA All-Americans.

Roberts was a student-athlete at Vanguard prior to his coaching tenure, where he served as team captain for two seasons. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies from Vanguard and also holds a Master’s degree in Athletic Administration and Coaching from Concordia University Irvine.
