Saginaw Valley State University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Randy Baruth has announced some additions to the program for the upcoming 2014-15 season.

The program has added James Hellekjaer as an assistant coach. Hellekjaer comes to the Cardinals from Division I Oakland University, where he served as the team’s Player Development Assistant and Video Coordinator.

While with the Golden Grizzlies, Hellekjaer’s responsibilities included: coordinating all video activities and needs, coordinating community outreach programs, assisting with the oversight of academic progress and assisting with day-to-day operations of the basketball program. Hellekjaer has also served as the director of the Greg Kampe Basketball Fundamental Camps since 2010.

Prior to Oakland, Hellekjaer served as a student manager for the women’s basketball team at Michigan State University. He assisted with day-to-day operations and had a variety of practice and game day responsibilities. He was part of three NCAA tournament teams, including two Sweet Sixteen appearances in 2006 and 2009.

"We are especially pleased to welcome James to our coaching staff and basketball program," said Baruth, who will be in his third season at the helm for the Cardinals. "James comes from a very good program at Oakland University and we look forward to him making an impact in areas such as recruiting, on-court coaching and other duties."

The team will have four student-athletes join the squad for the upcoming campaign as well, as Mitchell Baenziger, Sam Black, Lloyd Neely and Will Stuhr will all join the Cardinals for the 2014-15 season.
