Coach Dwayne “Redz” Saunders has been named as an assistant basketball coach at Elizabeth City State University.
Saunders comes to ECSU with a tremendous background for recruiting stellar student-athletes, whom have a history of excellence in the class as well as on the court. Coach has a dynamic result-oriented skill set for interacting with student-athletes to produce positive outcomes. He is passionate, diligent, and hard-working when it comes to building a winning team and cultivating CHAMPIONS for life.
Saunders served as Assistant Director of Athletics and Men’s assistant basketball coach at Goldey-Beacom College from September 2013 through 2016.
During his tenure coaching with the Lightning, he helped developed Donte McGill to be named CACC Rookie of the Year in 2013-14 who is now playing D! basketball at Florida International University. He was also responsible for recruiting 2014-15 Corey Taite who earned multiple Rookie of the Weeks in 2014-15 season. His 2011-13 recruiting class finished with a record of 20-7 in the 2016-17 season.
In three seasons as Head Coach at Delaware County Community College from 2010-13, Coach Saunders posted a 55-22 with overall record resulting in winning 0.714 percent of his contest. During his tenure at DCCC six players went on to play at four year universities. The squad made the conference tournament each of his three seasons with the Phantoms. This included a 23-2 mark during the 2011-12 season where he led the Phantoms to their first EPCC title since 1996. He was honored as the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (EPCC) Coach of the Year in 2011, During this season he help foster five All-Conference players Kayyir Laws, Dominique Owens, Rahsid Hines, Justin Wright, and Carl McKenzie, who continued their careers at the NCAA Division II level.
Saunders in 2012-13 team finished with an record of 16-12 capturing a spot in the Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC) before falling in the first round of conference play. His star player Tayqwane Wallace would go on to be honored as NJCAA Region 19 Player of the Year.
In his first season 2010 -11 he led and turned around a near defunct program to an 18-8 record through his tireless recruiting. The team earned a trip to the EPCC semi- finals before they were defeated by the defending champions Philadelphia Community College.
Saunders played at Lock Haven University in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). A 2003 graduate of Lock Haven University with a B.A. in Psychology, Saunders would go on to earn his Master’s degree in Sport Management from East Stroudsburg in 2009.
