Schmidt named assistant at Baldwin Wallace

Brian Schmidt is the new Baldwin Wallace University assistant men’s basketball coach. Schmidt, who is no stranger to BW Head Coach Duane Sheldon, played for him as a collegian at Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg University.

Schmidt comes to BW after spending the past five years as the head junior varsity and assistant varsity coach for former Yellow Jacket standout and graduate Joe Mackey at local Brunswick High School. He also has served as a sport specific trainer at UxL Sports and Fitness.

At Brunswick H.S., Schmidt led the junior varsity team to a 63-18 record the past four years and was the Northern Ohio League J.V. champions in both 2013 and 2014. He also assisted Mackey in a varsity program that has had at least 14 victories in each of his five seasons, appeared in the District semifinal in four of the past five years and a District runner-up finish in 2014. Schmidt also served as the strength and conditioning coach for the entire program.

At UxL, Schmidt, trained athletes in sports such as basketball, soccer, track and field, baseball and football and coordinated camps. He also worked in the day-to-day operations of the business.

As a collegian at Heidelberg, Schmidt was a four-year starter and two-year team captain. He helped Sheldon to lead the Student Princes to the 2008 OAC Tournament title, and individually earned All-OAC honors in both 2007 and 2008. He ended his career 14th on Heidelberg’s all-time scoring list with 1,143 points and owns school-records for season and career field goal shooting.

"We are pleased to welcome Brian Schmidt to the Baldwin Wallace men’s basketball family," said seventh-year Head Coach Duane Sheldon. "Brian has gained experience valuable experience the past five years both as a high school assistant coach and as a sport specific trainer.

"I coached Brian as a student-athlete and he has a wealth of knowledge regarding the game of basketball as well as strength and conditioning," said Sheldon. "We are looking forward to working with him."
