Stevenson University head men’s basketball coach Gary Stewart announced that Kevin Selby has joined the Mustang coaching staff for the upcoming 2019-20 season. Selby previously served as an assistant coach for the Mustangs from 2009-11, working with former head coach and current Director of Athletics Brett Adams.
Selby has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Goucher College. Prior to that, Selby was on the men’s basketball staff at St. Mary’s (Md.) as he helped guide the Seahawks to the Capital Athletic Conference regular-season title in 2014-15.
Selby also spent 12 seasons (1996-2008) at McDaniel College. During McDaniel’s 2006-07 season, Selby was named the interim head coach following the passing of head coach Bob Flynn (also the former St. Mary’s head men’s basketball coach). Taking over in January, he led the team to wins in three of their last five games in the Centennial Conference, including a 70-68 victory at then-No. 18 Johns Hopkins for McDaniel’s first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent. The Green Terror finished the season with 11 wins, the highest among the previous four.
During his time as an assistant coach Selby has been involved with many aspects of the programs including recruiting coordinator, scouting opponents and preparing scouting reports, scheduling, coaching the offense, monitoring academic progress of student-athletes, developing player skills, handling film exchange, analyzing video of opponents, assisting with practice preparation and implementation of practices, and being an offensive bench coach. He successfully recruited and coached three 1,000 point scorers and eight all-conference honorees.
In the summer of 1999, he served as an assistant coach for a Mid-Atlantic Region Division III Select Team which competed against professional teams in Sweden and Denmark. Selby did the same in the summer of 2000, accompanying a team to Belgium, Holland, and France.
Selby is an active member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and is certified in the organization’s professional development series. He has also worked numerous camps including Duke, West Virginia, Penn State and Seton Hall as well as Camp Director at McDaniel.
At the NCAA Final Four Selby served as a multi-time assistant/game manager, assisting several outstanding coaches such as Johnny Dawkins, Counzo Martin, Jim Crews, and John Lucas for the National Association of Basketball Coaches in the administration of the annual Reese’s Division I All-Star game.
A 1989 graduate of Northern Garrett, Selby played collegiately at Garrett College before finishing his degree at Frostburg State University where he received a Bachelor of Science in social sciences. He later received a master’s in counseling psychology from McDaniel.
