Smith Hired as Ithaca College Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach

Ithaca College men’s basketball head coach Waleed Farid has announced the hiring of his new assistant, Matthew Smith, for the upcoming 2022-23 season. Smith officially began his appointment at Ithaca on August 1.

Smith comes to South Hill after spending the last two seasons at The College at Brockport. The Golden Eagles went 18-8 this past winter with a second round appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament.

In 2019-20, Smith was an assistant at St. Joseph’s University-Long Island, and prior to that, he served as the director of basketball operations and head coach at Five Star Sports in Beijing, China from 2017-19.

Smith graduated from Brockport in May of 2017 with a degree in criminal justice and a minor in forensic science. He also completed his master’s degree in athletic administration at Brockport in May of 2022.

Smith was a three-year player (2015-2017) at Brockport where he played in 78 games throughout his career as a Golden Eagle.

Smith graduated from Northport High School on Long Island where he was a three-year varsity basketball starter. Smith was team captain for Northport’s Long Island Championship team in 2013. Smith was named All-Tournament MVP, as well as being named All-Conference and All-League in his senior season.
