SMU Hires Father of Top 20 Recruit as Director of Men’s Basketball Recruiting

Tyrone Maxey was named the Director of Recruiting, SMU Head Coach Tim Jankovich announced.

Maxey spent the previous 17 years as a high school basketball coach in the Dallas area, most recently as the assistant basketball coach at South Garland High School in Dallas from 2014-17.

Maxey’s son Tyrese, a guard at South Garland, is currently ranked #17 in ESPN’s 2019 Top 60.

Prior to his time at South Garland, the elder Maxey spent 11 seasons as a head basketball coach, leading Thomas Jefferson High School in 2003-04, A. Maceo Smith New Tech High School from 2004-09 and then Bryan Adams High School from 2009-14. Maxey’s coaching career started as the assistant basketball coach at Skyline High School from 2000-03.

Maxey graduated from Washington State in 1992 with bachelor’s degree in social science after playing two seasons (1990-92) under Head Coach Kelvin Sampson. He started his collegiate career at South Plains College (1988-90) in Levelland, Texas, where he was an all-conference honoree each season with Head Coach Ron Mayberry.
