Harvard Men’s Basketball’s Mike Sotsky – a member of the Crimson’s coaching staff since the 2016-17 season – has earned a promotion to Associate Head Coach, Tommy Amaker, The Thomas G. Stemberg ’71 Family Endowed Coach for Harvard Men’s Basketball, has announced.
“Our entire program is beyond excited to announce this promotion for Coach Sotsky,” Amaker said. “Coach Sotsky represents our program in a first-class manner on and off the court. An incredible resource to our student-athletes, to his colleagues, and to me personally, he has certainly earned this promotion through his hard work with our program over the last decade. We are incredibly lucky to have him on our staff and look forward to his continued impact on our program and our student-athletes.”
Sotsky’s elevation marks the first time in Amaker’s nearly two decades as the coach of the Crimson that an assistant coach has earned promotion to Associate Head Coach.
During Sotsky’s 10 years on the Crimson staff, including nine competitive seasons, Harvard has tallied a 146-111 overall record with a 74-52 mark in Ivy League play, won two Ivy League titles, competed in the NIT twice, and qualified for the Ivy League Tournament five times. During his time at Harvard, Sotsky has mentored one Ivy League Player of the Year, four Ivy League Rookies of the Year, and seven First Team All-Ivy student-athletes. Off the court, Sotsky has helped Harvard win the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award for 11 straight seasons, marking the longest active streak among Division I schools.
This past season, Sotsky helped the Crimson’s coaching staff garner Ivy League Co-Coaching Staff of the Year as Harvard posted a 17-12 overall record and 10-4 Ivy League mark, finishing in second place in the Ivy League standings for its highest finish since the 2019-20 season. Sotsky helped the Crimson lead the nation in free throw percentage (79.9) and lead the Ivy League in scoring defense (66.7 points per game).
Over the last three seasons, Sotsky has coached a pair of Ivy League Rookies of the Year, including Robert Hinton ’28 in the 2024-25 season.
In June 2020, Sotsky gained a spot on the Under Armour 30-Under-30 Team, which recognizes the top 30 college basketball coaches under the age of 30.
In 2019-20, the Crimson reached the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2014-15, finishing with a 21-8 record. On the way to its fifth-highest win total in program history, Harvard defeated power conference foes Texas A&M and California.
Sotsky helped the Crimson win back-to-back Ivy League titles in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, appearing in the NIT in each of those two seasons. Harvard earned its first-ever win in the NIT in 2019, capturing a 71-68 win over Georgetown.
Prior to Harvard, Sotsky spent five years at Duke, including four years as a student manager from 2011-15 and a year as a staff assistant in 2015-16. Sotsky served as a senior manager on the Blue Devils’ 2015 national championship team.
The Wyckoff, New Jersey native graduated from Duke in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts, double majoring in history and public policy. Sotsky completed the Education Leadership, Organizations, and Entrepreneurship (ELOE) program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, earning a Master’s in Education (Ed.M.) in May 2022.
