University of South Alabama head men’s basketball coach Richie Riley has agreed to a contract extension that will continue his leadership of the Jaguars through the 2030 season, Director of Athletics Dr. Joel Erdmann announced Monday afternoon.
In his tenure at South Alabama, Riley has led one of the most sustained runs of success in program history, highlighted by back-to-back 20-win seasons and a Sun Belt Regular Season Championship in 2024-25, both the program’s first since 2009. The Jags added a postseason berth in the National Invitation Tournament, their first since 2007.
“The decision to sign Coach Riley to an extension was a no-brainer,” said Erdmann. “Richie has elevated our men’s basketball program to a championship-caliber level in all facets. His sustained success on the court, combined with the development of his student-athletes outside the gym, makes him the perfect leader for South Alabama men’s basketball. Coach Riley has our department’s full support, and we know that our best days are ahead with him steering the ship.”
Since arriving in Mobile, Riley has elevated the Jaguars into a consistent contender in the Sun Belt, posting a 152-106 record that ranks third in program history behind Cliff Ellis and Ronnie Arrow. Earlier this season, he became the third head coach in program history to reach 150 wins at South Alabama and is the only active Sun Belt head coach to reach 150 wins with his current program. Riley has led South Alabama to at least a .500 record in all eight seasons at the helm and guided the Jaguars to 20-plus wins in each of the last two years.
Under his leadership, the Jaguars have built a clear identity centered on defensive toughness and efficiency, consistently ranking among the national leaders in fewest turnovers while holding opponents among the lowest field goal percentages in the Sun Belt. South Alabama has also established a strong presence in the paint, routinely outscoring opponents inside.
Riley has also developed high-level talent, including Sun Belt Player of the Year Chaze Harris, along with multiple All-Sun Belt selections during his tenure.
“I am very appreciative of President Bonner and Dr. Erdmann for the opportunity to lead a program I love so much,” Riley said. “This is home for me, Jess and our boys, and I’m incredibly thankful for that — especially because of how great this city is and the people who make it special. Being the head coach here means the world to me, and I’m excited to continue building our program and our basketball family. A big thank you to our players and coaching staff — they make this program what it is and make my job so much fun.”
