South Georgia State Basketball Staff Update

South Georgia State has added Kevin WIliams and James “Jay-Bird” Medlock to their men’s basketball staff.

KEVIN WILLIAMS

Williams joins the Hawks’ staff after spending one season with the Augusta University Jags. At AU he was an assistant coach for a team that won the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Title. Before winning a championship at Augusta University, Kevin was the head basketball coach at Calvary Christian School in Columbus, GA where won three region titles, while winning over 70 games from 2018 to 2022. Before becoming a high school head coach at his alma mater, Kevin was assistant basketball coach there at Calvary Christian and Prince Avenue in Athens, GA. He has 13 years of overall coaching experience and looks to be an asset to SGSC Hawks program. Besides recruiting, scouting, on court coaching, academics, promotions, and day-to-day activities with basketball; Kevin will also be working with Student Success as a Student Success Specialist.


Kevin married his wife Allison (Ally) Williams this summer and is a graduate of Columbus
State University and holds a Masters’ Degree from the University of Georgia.

JAMES “JAY-BIRD” MEDLOCK

Medlock comes to SGSC Hawks as the Director of Basketball Operations and Community Relations with a wealth of knowledge and experience in all phases of athletics and entertainment.

James, a former NFL Player, Ware County native and Waycross Hall of Fame honoree has an impressive four decades of experience in sports and entertainment. Medlock, a Purdue University Alumni and running back, played for the New York Giants right out of college for legendary NFL Head Coach Bill Parcells. James also was former Tour Manager for Hip Hop Icon Snoop Dogg and helped bring the Snoop Youth Football League into the City of Chicago resulting in 35 teams across the city with Super Bowl Champion and Former Chicago Bears, Otis Wilson helping to manage. Medlock has also worked with NFL Hall of Fame Jim Brown’s The AMER-I-CAN Foundation for at risk youth. His track record in using sports and entertainment as a catalyst for social change proceeds him in working with several national at-risk sports youth camps: Danny Clark’s New Orleans Saints camp, Michael Jordan Basketball Camp, Dwayne Wade Basketball Camp, John Lucas Invite-Only Elite Basketball Camp, and LeBron James Basketball Camp. Medlock also was a community assistant coach at Ware County High School under WCHS head coach, Tre Hill, a former SGSC assistant.


As a former athlete himself Medlock knows firsthand what it takes to win on the field and the
court and off. Medlock coached his two sons into Division One Colleges from Ware County
High School – including Chicago State, Georgia Tech and DePaul University. Medlock holds a
Masters’ Degree in Sports Management and Athletic Administration from Southern Nazarene
2019.

SGSC Hawks have won The GCAA two of the last three seasons, and are the winningest Men’s College Basketball Team in Georgia at any level over the last four season (97 wins) and are currently picked by The GCAA Coaches’ as preseason favorites to win The GCAA this season.
