I have heard that former Nevada head coach David Carter will be hired as a volunteer assistant at his alma mater St. Mary’s (CA). Carter, who was fired as the head coach at Nevada imediately following this year’s Mountain West Tournament, was inducted into the St. Mary’s Hall of Fame back in 2006. In addition to his playing experience at the school, he also served as an assistant there from 1997-1999. In his six years as the head coach at Nevada, he complied a 98-97 record with his best season coming in 2011-12 when he led the Wolf Pack to a 28-7 record.
The interesting thing to watch here is Carter’s contract situation. He is owed $300,000 per year for the next two years by Nevada. The only way Nevada would be off the hook would be if Carter found another job. Since the St. Mary’s job is a volunteer spot, technically Nevada is still responsible for the salary that it owes him. Not sure how this will play out, but will be interesting to keep an eye on.
