Texas A&M International University head men’s basketball coach Joel Taylor announced that Michael Johnson has joined the Dustdevil staff as an assistant coach.
“Coach Michael Johnson will be a fantastic addition to the Dustdevil family. Not only does he bring high level of energy and passion to our program, he also brings championship experience. Coach Johnson was an integral part of the Hawaii Pacific PAC West championship. I am very excited to work with him and I am expecting him to do big things for our program.”
Taylor said.
Johnson comes to TAMIU following two years at Hawaii Pacific University where he helped the Sharks to an overall record of 44-16 including the 2017 PacWest Conference Championship and a NCAA Division II West Regional appearance. At HPU, he was in charge of scouting while also helping with player development including working with All-American Chauncey Orr.
“I can’t thank Coach Taylor enough for the opportunity to join his staff and to help add to a championship program,” Johnson added. “I believe in his vision for the program and am looking forward to being a part of it. At the end of the day, I am extremely happy and blessed to be able to join the Dustdevil family.”
Johnson said.
A former Kansas Collegiate Athletic All-Conference performer, Johnson scored eclipsed the 1,000 point mark during his four-year career where he averaged 10 points, four rebounds and three assists per game.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in business management with a minor in criminal justice and sports management. He obtained his master’s degree in communications at HPU in 2018.
