Portland State Men’s Basketball Coach Jase Coburn has announced that Director of Player Development Quinton Upshur has moved into a full-time assistant coach role with the Vikings.
Upshur has worked at Portland State for the past year as an Academic Advisor and Basketball Program Director of Player Development. He will now have full on-court responsibilities as a Vikings Assistant Coach for the 2022-23 season.
“My loyalty to him was an important factor in this hire,” said Coburn. “He has done a great job for this program over the past year and worked really hard for us. His ability to communicate with the players was also a big factor because he already has existing relationships with them.
“Q’s playing experience in the Big Sky Conference was also important to this role. I coached against him when he was at Northern Arizona. He also played for (PSU Assistant) Coach Matt Dunn while he was there.
“He is very passionate, has a great basketball mind and a great future in this profession.”
Prior to coming to Portland State, Upshur worked the 2020-21 academic year as Director of Student-Athlete Development at the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina.
Upshur is originally from Norfolk, VA. He played basketball at Northern Arizona, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in 2015. Upshur went on to play five years of professional basketball overseas. He earned a Master’s in Sports Administration from Liberty University in 2019.
Upshur fills the role left vacant by former assistant Jamaal Williams, who moved to a similar position at UNLV.
